I am rather confused on this topic does a cartoon have to be from japan to be called anime? or does it need to be a similar art style? I am asking because shows like the new Thundercats and Avatar last airbender were american made cartoons that i would consider anime.

"Anime" is just the Japanese abbreviating things again, so it can be applied to animation in general, Just common word choice has lent itself to Japanese cartoons being animations and American animations being cartoons.
Personally I consider Avatar and Thundercats cartoons, subscribing to the prescriptive titles, even if Avatar has more of a typically Japanese art style.

Anime is defined as Japanese cartoons made for a Japanese audience. There are many american cartoons which borrow the anime art style because of its popularity as well as simplicity/expressions, but they cannot be considered an "anime" because for the above definition. As Stalray stated above: "Anime" is just the Japanese abbreviating things Think of it as a Japanese word for cartoon.

That's because it is just the Japanese word for Cartoon. Don't get hung up on the semantics of it all, guys. Just enjoy.

LOL sometimes I do, but not often. Usually when I am talking about Japanese animated films in comparison to Disney animation films
